Why we publish a page for every area

Because the answer genuinely changes from one municipality to the next, and for reasons that have nothing to do with distance.

The most obvious is the state line. Beloit sits on the Illinois border, and Wisconsin bans considerably more from landfill disposal than Illinois does — corrugated cardboard, yard waste, appliances, tyres, waste oil and lead-acid batteries are all prohibited by Wisconsin statute. Wisconsin also applies its own disposal surcharges. Three miles south, a different framework applies.

The second is the roads. From roughly mid-March into late April, township and county roads across Rock County get posted with seasonal weight limits as the frost comes out of the ground. City streets in Beloit and Janesville are largely unaffected; the rural roads out to Clinton, Footville, Orfordville and Brodhead very much are.

The third is more local still. The Town of Beloit is a separate municipality from the City, with its own government, its own roads and its own waste arrangements. It is the single most common local mix-up we deal with.

Each area page below covers the access quirks, the routing and what to expect on the ground.
