How this started

Curt Vandehey spent twelve years running demolition and remodelling crews around Rock County before buying a single truck and one container in 2012. The reason was straightforward: he had spent most of a decade waiting on containers that turned up late, turned up in the wrong size, or turned up with a price that changed once the load crossed a scale.

Fourteen years on we run a fleet across Beloit, Rock County and the northern Illinois villages, and the operating principle has not moved. Tell people the truth about what they need, put the container down without damaging anything, and charge the number that was quoted.

What we actually do differently

We recommend smaller containers. This is the one that surprises people. A great deal of the housing across Beloit, Rockton, Milton and the older parts of Janesville and Rockford was built when plaster over wood lath and heavy dimensional framing were ordinary construction. That material is dense. A 20 yard filled with it reaches its tonnage allowance at roughly two-thirds of its visible height, and the customer pays overage on space they were never permitted to use. Recommending the 15 yard instead costs us revenue and saves the customer money. We do it anyway.

We tell you what Wisconsin bans before the truck comes out. This state prohibits more from landfill disposal than most, and it is statute rather than guidance. Yard waste, corrugated cardboard, appliances, tyres, waste oil and lead-acid batteries are all on the list. A load arriving at a gate with any of it can be turned away, which costs you a day. We go through it at the quote stage instead.

We work the calendar, not just the map. Two seasonal facts shape this business here. From around mid-March into late April, town and county roads get posted with weight limits as frost leaves the ground, and a loaded roll-off is precisely what those postings target. And from December to the end of March, the Clean Fill Facility that takes concrete is closed. Both change what we can do and what it costs, and we would rather raise them in advance.

One number. The flat rate covers delivery, seven days, collection, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance, with the overage rate quoted in the same breath. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee appearing on an invoice for the first time.

Why the state line matters

Beloit sits on the Illinois border, and a job three miles south is a genuinely different disposal proposition from one three miles north. Wisconsin's landfill bans are Wisconsin statute and Illinois does not mirror them item for item. Wisconsin applies its own state surcharges to disposal, totalling around thirteen dollars a ton, which fund the state's recycling programmes.

Waste can legally cross the line — courts have consistently held that states cannot place undue burdens on interstate commerce, and the Wisconsin DNR is explicit that it cannot restrict a landfill based on where waste came from. The real question is always which facility will take which material and at what rate.

A company quoting an identical number on both sides of the line is averaging and hoping nobody asks. We quote each job on its actual routing, and we will explain the difference if you want to hear it.

• Trey Lindgren — Lead Driver. Has been threading containers onto tight village driveways and long farm approaches for nine years. If he says a 30 will not fit, it will not fit.
• Bonnie Kaczmarek — Customer Care Lead. First voice on the phone most mornings, and the person who will walk you through what can and cannot go in the container.
